It was a few years back, the days when my notebook was full of college and university names, scratched with deadlines, SAT score thresholds, board exam scores, certificates, activity lists, subject choices etc. I congratulated myself for having started out systematically and early, three years before my son would actually come to this threshold, but somehow the time seemed to have evaporated, leaving a litany of vectors to consider before we were ready.
Those days, my mind was filled with numerous questions. Why is it that students have to pick their career choices based on their abilities? Why can’t they pick their dream career and change their abilities to become the right fit? How can one do so? How do I look for the ideal mentor? Why should there be stereotypes at all? How do we develop interests in a child?
I looked for someone who could help me tackle these questions on career goals, college admissions, India and abroad, career choices, talent mapping, talent development etc in a gradational manner year on year. In the absence of the right mentor, I became my only army and mentor. I decided to view my questions systematically and objectively and thus slowly and steadily built a repository of research findings, directory of colleges, and developed an expertise in evaluating career options. I realized the cavity in the system. The need of the day was more professional, experienced experts to handhold the aspiring college students through the post school rubble. And this creek became my call.
An idea started taking form – I knew the gap, I had got into the thick of planning my son’s college education, I had done the mistakes and become experience rich.
I decided to arm myself with professional skills in counselling psychology, training and development, coaching, educational and career counseling. Pieces of the remaining jigsaw puzzle - talent assessment, interest evaluation, skill set mapping, college selection, essays, deadlines, resume building etc. gradually fell in place. Today, my arsenal is fully furnished, catering to school and college students, professionals looking at career transition and women in their second career innings, both within and outside India.
The idea that took root in between the pages of my notebook, from the scrawled down possibilities, scratched out options has today, slowly evolved itself into an organization passionately guiding people (of all age groups) towards their dreams with the vision of making a difference in each individual’s life! And that is how “Strelitzia” bloomed.
The narrative of my journey will be incomplete without thanking my children and husband for supporting my flight into new skies. They have extended remarkable support, when their mother, was undergoing her transformative training as a counselor. Their patience is displayed by the number of times they ate their dinner alone because mom was in a counseling session with a student.
Their bedtime stories have not been of about the vulnerable princesses being rescued by the boy scouts. They heard the experiences of people in fighting stereotypes related to their talents and personalities, experiences of people navigating tough system, education, life, careers. Their heroes are the people I meet- who transform and redeem themselves from their own cages and take to skies like they were born to fly.
My interest in psychology, coupled with my overall experience of 19 years has given me a deep perspective on people, capabilities and industry demands. Reflecting on my experiences, I have understood that the real workplace needs people who are having gravity and weight beyond their resume. The real skills to thrive are not only your technical expertise but emotional abilities. A person equipped in dealing with stress, pressure, failure, and flaws is a better candidate than the one who has straight A's, infallible, a perfect 10. I believe that life happens in between the struggles of trundling from 0 to 10. Somewhere in between is where you learn the emotional resilience and tenacity to prevail despite all odds.
